3 ex-officers sentenced in homeless beating
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Three former Knoxville Police officers have been sentenced to a year of supervised probation for beating a homeless man.
According to the Knox County Criminal Court Clerk’s office, Ty Compton, Jeremy Jinnett and Chris Whitfield were sentenced on Thursday.
The men pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and a felony charge of official oppression in June.
According to reports, they were called to Grainger Avenue on Feb. 9 after someone reported that Michael Mallicoat was yelling and waving his arms erratically while walking on the road.
Prosecutors say the officers struck Mallicoat with their fists, stood on him, kicked him, hogtied him and dropped him. Mallicoat suffered broken ribs and was hospitalized.
The officers initially were removed from patrol duties and have since resigned.
