Helen’s BBQ highlighted for National Black Business Month
BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — August is National Black Business Month. In celebration, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter is making nine stops across the state to recognize black-owned businesses.

Tuesday was the third of his nine stops at Helen’s BBQ in Brownsville.

Owner Helen Turner is a Brownsville native who cooks with hickory and oak.
The menu offers pulled pork, ribs, potato salad, coleslaw and more. From Japan to Sweden, customers come from across the world to visit.
Turner shares that her favorite part of work is interacting with her customers.
“I want all of my customers to know that I love them to death and when I retire I’m gonna miss each and every one of them. Every last one of them is sweet as gold,” said Turner.
The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development worked alongside other state partners and local stakeholders to identify businesses in each of their nine regions that have significantly impacted their employees, their community and the state of Tennessee.
