CCMS student charged in scheme to cover up threat he created
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CROCKETT COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT:
CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — A CCMS student was arrested and charged for threatening violence.
The offending juvenile created a fake Snapchat account in another student’s name and sent the threat through the fake account. However, the CCSD Criminal Investigation Division, the school resource officer, and an agent with Homeland Security were able to determine the true origin of the threat and the student confessed to committing these crimes.
During the investigation, it was determined that the juvenile did not create or send these threats during school hours. Furthermore, there was no weapon and no current ability to carry out the threat. The juvenile was petitioned to juvenile court by CCSD Investigators with Judge Paul Conley presiding.
Also, the school system has a separate process where students accused of violating school policy are brought before the disciplinary board.
This board independently determines if a policy was violated and what the appropriate discipline will be (in-school-suspension, suspension, expulsion, etc. and for how long). We appreciate the school administration, teachers/staff, students, and parents for your cooperation, patience and understanding.
All of us are committed to keeping everyone safe and holding those accountable who attempt to disrupt the learning environment. Again, this occurred outside of school hours — parents, please have meaningful engagement with your children about their actions as well as the consequences. The charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct and not evidence.
The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law. The 28th Judicial District Attorney General will be prosecuting this case where facts and evidence against the defendant will be presented in the court of law.
