Station: Muscle breakdown hospitalizes 3 students

FULTON, Miss. (AP) – A north Mississippi television station reports that three 13-year-olds who tried out for basketball last week at Itawamba Middle School are hospitalized in Memphis.

WTVA-TV (http://bit.ly/19HlNUL) reports all three are being treated at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis for problems caused by muscle breakdown.

Chris and Stephanie Senter say their 13-year-old son, Baylee, was diagnosed with the condition, which is called rhabdomyolysis (RAB-doh-my-AHL-uh-sis).

County schools superintendent Michael Nanney says, “There’s a lot of misinformation out there” but wouldn’t say what it is. He told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he won’t comment until the students are safe at home.

National Athletic Trainers Association board member Paul Ullucci (you-LOO-chee) of Providence, R.I., tells the AP that exercise past an athlete’s ability can bring on the condition.
