Milan PD accepting applications, donations for its ‘Shop with a Cop’ program
MILAN, Tenn. — A local program returns to bring Christmas cheer to children.
Milan’s Shop with a Cop program is set for December 16. The event pairs kids up with officers to ride in police cars to Walmart and choose gifts.
Parents often meet participants at the store where kids have a preset amount of money to spend. Neighboring law enforcement agencies help out to allow around 80 kids to attend. This allows for the children to have a positive interaction with law enforcement.
The people that make this event possible include generous citizen donations, the Milan Business Community, and city employees that have payroll deductions with money that goes straight to shop with a cop.
“There’s no administrative cost, we don’t use any kinda fees or anything like that so all the money that we are given, a hundred percent of it goes to the kids,” said Chief Bobby Sellers with the Milan Police Department.
It’s the 19th year of this program which accepts donations year round.
