Residents stock up on food, supplies as winter storm draws closer
JACKSON, Tenn. — As the winter storm slowly makes it way to West Tennessee, residents are already preparing.
According to the National Retail Federation, 90 % of businesses’ annual weather driven sales come from day to day changes influenced by weather conditions.
Some of the most popular items to buy in preparation are nonperishable items, especially canned items. Other items are emergency items like batteries and generators. For shoppers in the Hub City, their most sought after items were milk, eggs and bread.
“I got bread — I tried to get milk they were out. Cheese, frozen pizzas, some chips, snack foods and ramen noodles,” said Ryanne, shopper.
However one shopper had an alternative item to buy.
“That’s what I’m looking for, just in case the electricity goes out. Buy some water and powder milk, you don’t know anything about that though right,” said Shaywanna, shopper.
For another shopper buying milk, she opted for chocolate milk.
“I was just coming in to get a few things before the snow gets here and back there, there is no white milk. There was chocolate, I did buy some of that but thank God I already got a gallon at home anyway. I imagine a lot of people are doing without that right now,” said Jean, shopper.
Sometime snow days mean no school and even no work, but for others it can mean lots of fun.
“I love the snow, I am originally from Cincinnati and I’ve missed it a lot of winters. I’m looking forward to it myself. I’m gonna curl up with some hot chocolate and enjoy it,” said Jean, shopper.
“If it snows they’re gonna call us out but I don’t know. I go out in the snow ride four wheelers and stuff like that,” said Ryanne, shopper.
While others will prepare to spend their snow days helping others at work.
“No, I have to go. I am an essential worker, healthcare regency. We have to be there. So if I’m stuck there, it’s like home, so I’ll be there,” said Shaywanna, shopper.
Straits’ research says that aside from food items, another essential for shoppers in the southern states is salt for de-icing sidewalks and roads.
