Madison County Commissioners vote on Pope road expansion

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Madison County Commission met Monday to vote on the Pope Elementary School road expansion.

At the beginning of this year, it was uncertain if the City or County would pay for this road expansion. Monday morning, commissioners voted on their approval for a decision.

“The Pope Elementary was an off-site agreement where the County has agreed to do all off-site improvements required by the City,” said Chairman Michael Taylor. “So that the school can open, and hopefully it’s going to open on time.”

This was also an agreement with the City.

Chairman Taylor thanks the school system, Jackson Mayor Scott Conger, and county Mayor AJ Massey.

“In return, the City has agreed to extend the sales tax agreement for another 20 years. Like I said during the meeting, this is a win for the entire community,” Williams said.

Commissioners also did their annual road list. This list is to make sure that all county roads are accounted for in the event of a name change or an added road. This is to make sure first responder can help appropriately.

Commissioners also discussed adding policies to their employee handbook.

“All of these things were previously approved a couple years ago, just wasn’t added to the handbook,” said Williams.

Also, Madison County hired Evergreen Solutions, LLC to conduct research to make sure workers were being paid correctly.

“Evergreen is going to do a salary study to see where our county is in comparison to counties our size across the state, and maybe across some of the surrounding areas. Everyone will be getting a raise of some type this year,” Williams said.

Savannah Williamson Park, located in Demark, was also approved as a county park, but with two stipulations: one is to return property the way it was received after 30 year period, and the park is removed from property tax.
