Trenton Police Investigate New Phone Scam
When Trenton Police Lieutenant James Wilson received a call from a someone claiming to be an account manager with Verizon Wireless, he knew something was not right. “They immediately started pressuring me for my account information. When I started questioning who they were, they hung up on me,” Wilson said. He is now one of a few who have fallen victim to this new phone scam. Thanks to his training and quick thinking, Wilson said he was able to avoid getting scammed, however, that may not be the case for others. “For the average citizen who was not aware, who may be a little behind their bill, it would seem very convincing that Verizon is calling you to try and get your bill in order,” said Wilson. According to Wilson, the caller told him his account was passed due and began asking for personal information. Unfortunately for one Trenton resident Wilson said the call seemed too real. “We have had one person that has been a victim of this scam,” Wilson said. So far, all of the complaints have come from phone numbers beginning with 731-414-XXXX with the Verizon network, according to Wilson. To protect yourself, officers advise wireless costumers to look out for incoming calls from private or blocked numbers. Be aware if the caller has a “now or never” attitude and know your account information. If you do get a call that seems legitimate, do not be afraid to tell them you will call them back on a known number. For many, Wilson believes these tips may be the difference in becoming a victim of identity theft. “When you get done they have got your name, social security number and your credit card with your name on it,” Wilson said. If you believe you are a victim of this phone scam contact your local law enforcement office immediately.
