Nurses Train to Examine Sexual Assault Victims

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Nurses at JMC General Hospital are training this week for sexual assault examinations. The nurses will spend 40 hours this week learning how to examine sexual assault victims. They also learn how to present evidence in court to assist with investigations and prosecutions. The training also gives nurses a chance to decide if they can handle treating these victims. “It’s on an individual basis. We tell them in the beginning that sometimes going through this training is what shows whether they can or can’t do this,” Traci Walker, a Registered Nurse and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, said. The program was started by Captain Mike Holt at the Jackson Police Department. The nurses who go through this training have practiced nursing at least a year.
