Police Still Increasing Patrols In East Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn-Throughout the city, specifically in the southern district, there is an increase in police patrols after multiple shootings in east Jackson this week. “We’re going to continue with an increase of presence like this for the next several days,” said Deputy Chief Barry Michael. Police have no suspects in custody after this week’s five shootings that injured two and took the lives of two more; but they said more officers on the street could decrease violence. “If they would have done that in the beginning it may have stopped what happened,” Bryston Musgrave, an east Jackson resident said. Officers said more patrols serve as a preventative measure; but it also means more tax dollars will be spent. According to Deputy Chief Michael, the department is spending money in their overtime budget and many officers who work 8 hour shifts are now working 12 hours to increase presence. “It is coming out of our overtime budget,” Michael said. “It is taxpayers’ dollars.” And with no definite end date in mind, the increased patrol could last for several days or even weeks; but officials said their goal is to protect the citizens of Jackson.
