Local bail bond tax proposed
DANDRIGE, Tenn. (AP) – Officials in Jefferson County are seeking a change in the state’s bail bonds tax law.
Jefferson County Commissioner Rob Blevins told the Citizen Tribune (http://bit.ly/1dzqAFM) that he is working with county attorney Larry Churchwell to draft a resolution requesting sponsorship of legislation that would allow cities and counties to impose a tax on bail bonds.
State law does not currently give local governments the power to enact such a tax.
Churchwell says the state collects a $12 fee on each bond issued.
Blevins said his proposal would add a 2.5 percent tax on each bail bond written.
The county commission is expected to vote on the proposed resolution on Monday.
