UPDATE: Inmate caught 1 mile from sheriff’s office after stealing patrol vehicle
UPDATE (11:05 am): Cannon was apprehended and taken into custody approximately one mile from the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office.

EEARLIER STORY (10:01 am):
HARDEMAN COUNTY, Tenn. – The Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for an inmate who escaped custody earlier Monday from the Hardeman County Jail.
Preliminary information indicates the inmate, Randy Cannon of Whiteville, Tennessee, gained access to a marked Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit that was parked on jail property and undergoing maintenance. The inmate entered the vehicle and drove away from the facility without authorization.
The escape occurred during normal operations, and the incident is currently under investigation. Jail staff immediately initiated escape protocols and notified surrounding law enforcement agencies. Multiple agencies are assisting in the search.

At this time, the location of the inmate and the patrol unit is unknown. The inmate should be considered dangerous, and the public is advised not to approach if located.
According to records, Cannon was booked into the Hardeman County jail on August 10, 2025 for aggravated burglary, domestic assault, and theft.
