Man Found Dead on Porch, Freezing Temps Possible Factor

LEXINGTON, Tenn. — Police say a 70-year-old Lexington man was found dead around 7:00 a.m., Monday. Officials said because of below freezing temps they cannot rule out the possibility the man froze to death. His neighbor, Josephine Campbell discovered his body. “(I) got ready to cook my breakfast and I looked out the window and that’s when I saw him laying on the porch and I figured he was dead,” Campbell said. After seeing her dead friend, Campbell said she immediately panicked. “I just started crying and put my clothes on and went to try to get help,” Campbell said. Captain Jeff Middleton of the Lexington Police Department said they are investigating how he ended up on the porch. “We have no indications at this point at all that there’s anything other than natural causes or potentially exposure to the cold temperatures,” Middleton said. Neighbor Ricky Rich said he is distraught. “He checked on me, checked on everybody around the neighborhood,” Rich said. Rich said it feels like he has lost more than just a good friend. “He treated me more like a son, than anything,” Rich said. Neighbors said they have no choice but to pick up the pieces and move forward. “I hope that he didn’t have to suffer you know, i just hope that, I hope that he didn’t,” Campbell said. Middleton said the victim’s body will be taken to the state medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death, and whether freezing temperatures were a contributing factor.
