Jackson Salvation Army Faces New Challenges

JACKSON, Tenn. — Even the coldest nights would not stop the Christmas tradition of ringing bells for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. “We are a part of the scene of Christmas, I think that’s what’s important with drawing in the cash,” said Major Jayne Brewster. This season, bell ringers in Jackson are finding out that many people’s wallets are empty. Mostly because of credit cards. Connie Gonsalez has been bell ringing for a couple of weeks now and says she has even noticed the lack of change that shoppers and donors carry. The Jackson Salvation Army though says they have not noticed a decrease in donations though. They have discovered that the donations they are receiving are much bigger than previous years. “There’s not as much change as usual. As for bills though we’re getting more $5’s, $10’s, and $20’s and I think we even had a few $100 bills more than last year, so cash is still coming in,” said Major Brewster. The Jackson Salvation Army says that donations are down this year by $10,000 but believe the weather is still playing a major role in the decrease or increase in donations they receive each year. In the past they have tried using handheld credit card machines but found out quickly that it would be a hassle.
