New app “SafeTrek” works with local officers to protect you

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn.- The pass code to your smartphone can now do more than just secure your phone with the new app “Safe Trek.” “I think it’s great! I think it gives you confidence walking through a parking lot or whatever,” Grace Carbonell said, a self defense instructor for ATA Martial Arts. Safe Trek is free to download for iPhone and Android. If you feel unsafe, just open the app and hold down the button until your in a safe area. If you do not punch in your pass code in 10 seconds the app lets officers near you know you need help. “We live in a society where violence tends to be more the norm,” Lt. Jerry Elston with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department said. ATA Martial Arts said one in four woman are likely to be raped in their lifetime, and one out of every ten people have the chance of getting attacked. Carbonell, a black-belt, tells WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News even she needs the app. “Even though I know how to protect myself that only goes so far,” Carbonell said. Officers said always do your research before downloading any app, and understand how it operates so you do not falsely alert authorities.
