JACKSON, Tenn. — After serving 2 tours in Afghanistan, Army Sgt. Joshua Permenter and his family got a heart-warming surprise Saturday morning. “I’m so overwhelmed. I’m still trying to get processed the whole thing. I mean, it’s just amazing you know, my kids have a home now,” said Rachel Permenter, Joshua’s wife. Through Bank of America’s Home Strong program, the hardships this family has gone through over the past several years just got a little easier. Complications at home made it especially difficult for Sgt. Permenter to be at war. “He was deployed in Afghanistan shortly after we had our second child,” explained Rachel, “I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder.” These health complications led to other financial struggles as well. “It’s been rough. It was hard having him gone and not having that support, but we did ok,” said Rachel. Now with their mortgage-free home, there’s a place for them and their three kids to live. “It’s good for me as well as her to see that our kids have a home instead of somewhere we have to rent and not have permanent, so it’s actually a good thing for the kids to have somewhere they can be settled for good now,” said Sgt. Permenter. Permenter was able to take an early retirement from the Army, and his childhood dream of settling down in West Tennessee with a family has officially come true. This is one of more than 1,000 houses donated to a military family through the Home Strong program. Families like the Permenters that receive these houses are provided with financial education and housing counseling.
