FBI chief visits Memphis, discusses priorities
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – FBI Director James Comey says top law enforcement challenges in the Memphis region include stopping sex trafficking, fighting drug-related violent crime and catching domestic terrorists.
Comey addressed media Wednesday as part of his tour of FBI offices. Comey, who had been to 30 other cities before Memphis, is beginning a 10-year term as FBI chief.
Comey said law enforcement in the Memphis region was part of a national roundup of sex traffickers announced Monday. The FBI said 168 children were rescued from the sex trade nationwide, and 281 pimps were arrested.
Comey said a top concern is “home-grown violent extremists” who’ve been inspired by al-Qaida to potentially plan attacks in the U.S.
The Memphis division covers 54 Tennessee counties and includes the cities of Nashville and Jackson.
