Madison County students awarded $1,000 scholarships

EAST JACKSON — An East Jackson church handed out thousands of dollars to Madison County students on Sunday. Members of Life Christian Church presented two checks for $1,000. The Barry T. Chaney Charisma Scholarship is named after the church’s founder. The recipients are 2014 high school graduates, Bates from Liberty Tech Magnet High School and Kali Hill from Jackson Central Merry High School. The church says the students don’t need a certain GPA to qualify and it’s based on financial need. “We’re making history because we’re the first two to actually accept this award from Mr. Barry T. Chaney,” Hill said. “I just feel really nice about receiving it because I’ve worked really hard to get to this point in my life.” This is the first year the church has presented the scholarship. Members say they give applications to each school in Jackson-Madison County, and the goal is to give 10 scholarships every year.
