NAACP holds second candidate forum

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Madison County Chapter of the NAACP holds a second of three Madison County candidate forums. Monday’s forum focused on the races for sheriff, four county commissioner positions, one school board post and the county clerk election. Each candidate was given 3 minutes to introduce themselves and they were then asked three questions each. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News caught up with the two men battling to become Madison County’s next sheriff. “We have some issues in Jackson, Madison County and we need to address them and as your sheriff from day one. I will attack those issues,” said Rick Staples, candidate for Madison Co. Sheriff. “That we can bring ideas and innovations that other departments will want to follow behind us,” John Mehr said, candidate for Madison Co Sheriff. Current Sheriff Tommy Cunningham is not running for election. He was appointed earlier this year to finish David Woolfork’s term, who retired, amid controversy. Early voting begins July 18. The NAACP will hold its third and final forum Tuesday, July 8.
