Tennessee clergy to voice support for educational choice
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A group of Tennessee clergy has planned a news conference at the state Capitol Thursday morning to voice support for educational choice.
The coalition is expected to present the governor and state lawmakers with petitions from Tennesseans who support empowering parents through educational choice legislation, such as a proposal to create a school voucher program in Tennessee.
That measure gives parents the option to move a child from a failing public school to a private school.
The voucher proposal passed the Senate Education Committee earlier this month and is similar to one proposed last year by Republican Gov. Bill Haslam. Last year’s proposal passed the Senate but failed in the House after attempts to expand its eligibility.
Haslam also failed to pass voucher legislation in the previous session.
