DC mayor appoints new schools superintendent
WASHINGTON (AP) – District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser has appointed Hansuel Kang as the city’s new schools superintendent.
Kang will head the city’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education. That doesn’t mean she’s the chief executive for District schools – that job belongs to Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson. The superintendent’s office functions like a state education department, handling federal grants and standardized testing.
Kang has served as chief of staff for Tennessee’s education department since 2001. Education Secretary Arne Duncan has praised Tennessee’s school reform efforts.
Kang is also a former high school teacher and former manager at a Teach For America regional office in the District.
