BIG SANDY, Tenn. — It wouldn’t be the start of Memorial Day Weekend without the 40th annual Big Sandy Spring Festival. Cars, funnel cakes and music are the three things that define Big Sandy every Memorial Day Weekend. “It’s a good thing,” Megan Dilda said. “We all see each other, we have a good time and we make everything good.” In the 40th year of the Big Sandy Spring Festival, tradition hasn’t changed much. The festivities start on a Friday with a concert. Then on Saturday morning, the parade rolls through the neighborhoods. “The parade was good. They threw candy and I got a bunch,” Giana Watkins said. Then the muscle makes its way into town from West Tennessee and surrounding states. Legendary cars line the streets for one of the biggest car shows hosted in the area, something out-of-towners say they look forward to every year. “I love it here,” Bob Jones said. “All the people are really nice, plus they have a parade. You got airplanes flying over — it’s just a lot of people that are all really nice.” Organizers for the spring festival say the event is like their Super Bowl. It brings a community together and raises thousands of dollars for the community, which residents say is huge for a town this size. “It’s such a small community here, and I think it’s a great thing for this community,” Ronnie Watkins said.
