LEXINGTON, Tenn. — Police have confirmed a shooting has taken place at a Lexington newspaper. Capt. Jeff Middleton has confirmed a shooting took place late Tuesday morning at the Lexington Progress newspaper. Police say the shooting appears to be self-inflicted. The victim has been airlifted to a Memphis hospital, according to police. They say the victim is in critical condition. The Lexington Progress is located next to the Learn-A-Lot Preschool and Cammy Smith, a teacher, said they saw the police cars, fire trucks and helicopter at the scene. Smith was shocked at how close this incident happened. “You just never really know what’s going to happen,” Smith said. “You hear it all the time. I don’t really know — it’s just scary being that close.” One former employee of the Lexington Progress said the paper was like a family and that this was going to be hard for the community.
