NEWBERN, Tenn. — Former chief of police for the Newbern Police Department Doug Robertson has filed a lawsuit against the city, its mayor and the city recorder. The lawsuit that was filed July 25 in U.S. District Court claims the city was illegally conducting a driving school through the police department and that evidence was missing from the police department’s evidence room including drugs, money and a gun. According to his attorney, speaking out about these practices is why Robertson was fired. “We’re alleging that Chief Robertson spoke out about those illegalities that he perceived were happening in the city, and we’re saying that because he spoke out, that’s why he took those actions,” said Robertson’s attorney Michael Weinman. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News reached out to Newbern’s mayor and city recorder but did not receive a reply.
