U.S. Marshals Capture Homicide Suspect in West Tennessee
U.S. Marshals said Saturday they captured Joseph Emery, 32, who they said was wanted in Champaign County, Illinois for first degree Murder. They said he was captured at a home in the 2000-block of Maple Circle in Humboldt. “I think it’s crazy. It’s definitely odd. You wouldn’t think of something happening this close,” said Frank Snowden, a neighbor. Authorities said they had been searching for Emery for months who they said has family in Jackson and Humboldt. Agents said a tip led to an early search of the home where Emery was living with family members. “I’ve got a wife and a four-year-old daughter. It make me want to be there and make sure I protect them at all times,” said Grant Spegal, a neighbor. Thought to have died of a fatal asthma attack, a deputy with the U.S. Marshals said a bullet later found in the back of the victim’s head would lead to a homicide investigation. He said Emery was arrested in Jackson in February of 2011 on an unrelated warrant and was then extradited back to Illinois. He said Emery was released on a bond and the warrant for this arrest issued one month later. Neighbors in the community said the incident is a stark reminder of the need to always remain watchful and cautious. “To have a supposed killer in your neighborhood, that’s pretty scary,” said Spegal. Authorities said Emery will be held in the Madison County Jail until his extradition back to Illinois.
