Dog Helping Kids Get Comfortable Reading
A once stray dog is now helping local students improve their reading skills. Frankie the dog joined the Dyersburg school staff about a year ago when their Director of Student Services, Brad Smith, adopted him from a nearby animal shelter. He was put through extensive training to become a registered therapy dog. Now, Frankie visits local schools and lets students of all ages read to him. Smith believes this helps the children become more comfortable and increases their reading scores. “Animals don’t judge them. And studies do show and have for some time, just the health benefits of petting a dog or a cat or any type of animal helps lower blood pressure, helps people feel a little more calm,” said Smith. The Dyer City School System covered the adoption fees and training costs for Frankie with they say estimated to be around $500 total. A local veterinarian covers all his medical needs.
