Texting and driving is illegal in Tennessee, yet thousands of drivers still type out messages and send them from behind the wheel, everyday. The Brown family shared their story of loss due to texting while driving. In November 2009, their 17-year-old daughter and sister, Alex Brown died in a wreck caused by her texting while driving to school. Dozens of students and community members gathered at Humboldt General Hospital Tuesday night to hear the Texas family’s story. They have been traveling the country for two years with the hope of making a difference. “It takes just a few seconds on that cell phone to go off the road and to lose your life. So they start thinking about what could happen to them, what would happen to their family if they made that choice and a lot of them will decide to put that cell phone down in the car and not text and drive,” said Jeanne Brown, Alex Brown’s mother. Organizers told 7 Eyewitness News about 60 people at Tuesday’s event signed pledges handed out by the Browns not to text and drive.
