A recent up-tick in crime in the city of Jackson has many in the area worried for their safety. Just this week two men were shot while playing basketball in Muse Park. Jackson Police say they are taking a pro-active role in stopping more violent crimes from happening and are putting more officers on the streets to do so. So far this year, the Hub City has had four homicides. This time last year, the city of Jackson had seen only one. The first murder of the year happened on the campus of Lane College on February 1. Deputy Chief Gerry Campbell of the Jackson Police Department is now putting extra officers on the streets more every day and targeting areas where data shows crimes are happening. He said people can expect to see more officers from Hollywood to Airways, Airways to Downtown and east Jackson to North Parkway. Chief Campbell said he and his officers are devoted to stopping this up-tick in crime. “If you commit a crime we’re going to arrest you. If you want to commit gun crimes, fire guns create an unsafe and unhealthy conditions for our residents then were going to lock you up,” said Chief Campbell. Deputy Chief Campbell said a grant will pay for the overtime for officers working on the targeted patrols. He says the department has $210,000 to put toward overtime.
