Thousands Flock to Shiloh for 150th Anniversary
Thousands of people flocked to West Tennessee to be a part of one of the biggest Civil War reenactments, at the Battle of Shiloh. Re-enacting in the Battle of Shiloh, was a very pivotal moment in John Saporito’s life. “Always been a focus of mine to hit all the 150th’s,” said John Saporito. Saporito said the Battle of Shiloh back on April 6 and 7 of 1862 was the first big battle of the Civil War, with more than 23,000 casualties. Playing a part in bringing the war back to life for viewers was what Saporito said meant the most. “I believe it’s the stories, that these men created, their lives, their motives, their families, and it’s so heart wrenching sometimes the decisions they had to make,” added Saporito. On Saturday, more than 23,000 people came out to the Shiloh National Park, to watch a reenactment of the Battle of Shiloh, while many said, they couldn’t help but remember the soldiers who fought in the Civil War 150 years ago. “Just amazed at the spectacle, the commitment of the re-enactors, the realism that goes with it, the excitement of being involved,” said Herman Maass. Mass said he hoped the younger generation would continue to perform reenactments of the Civil War. “By coming to events such as these, what you’re seeing in essence is people that are so involved heavily in the history of our country and this gives people the opportunity to witness it first hand,” added Saporito.
