Medina Middle School will soon be expanding. According to school officials, some classrooms were overcrowded, and they needed more room to grow. They told 7 Eyewitness News they have been wanting to do the project for the past three years, and it was time to finally start construction. The hallways of Medina Middle School are bustling with students, but in a year-and-a-half, they will have a bit more walking space. “We’re full right now, and we have got to do something for growth,” said Medina Middle Principal Steve Maloan. If first opened in 2000 with more than 200 students. Now it has 900! “We don’t have any empty room or space anywhere, so we’re having classrooms in a lot of different places, so this is an exciting expansion for us,” Maloan said. Principal Maloan said they will soon be getting 16 new state-of-the-art classrooms, an auxiliary gym and adding onto their cafeteria. They are adding onto the school, because Medina Elementary is overcrowded, and has no room to expand. They will be moving the third graders over to the middle school campus, with the idea of two schools operating independently in one building. “With the campus that we have here, it’s very conducive to adding on because we’re able to handle the traffic and the congestion,” Maloan said. Right now Medina Middle holds fourth through eighth graders. “It will create a concept of two schools in Medina Middle School because we’ll have a 3rd, 4th and 5th grade wing, and then we’ll have a 6th, 7th and 8th grade middle school wing,” he said. For now, Maloan said they are planning to keep the same name, but that could later change. School officials said the new additions to the middle school should be ready by fall 2013.
