Summer is just around the corner but the temperatures feel like it is already here. At the YMCA, leaders say finding ways to keep their campers cool when they are outside is always a priority. YMCA bus driver Ricky Butler understands the challenge. “It’s hot but we have to deal with that. It’s summer time and we have to do the best we can you know,” said Butler. The heat when you are in the outdoors is just one of the concerns you should have as the temperatures rise. The heat inside cars can turn deadly quickly. “Even though it’s only 85 to 90 degrees outside, the temperature of the sun hitting the car is going to elevate it to 115-120 degrees in just a matter of minutes. So it’s never safe to leave a child or a pet anything inside the car,” said Tony Murdaugh of the Jackson Fire Department. The Jackson Fire Department often attends outdoor functions like the world’s largest heart outside of Jackson-Madison County General Hospital armed with a water hose to give kids a break from the heat. “At certain times your heat and body temperature gets so high you know your skin or something will turn real red or you stop sweating, that’s when it’s time to take a break,” said Murdaugh.
