JACKSON, Tenn. — While there were a variety of items on the agenda of the Madison County Commission’s October meeting, the topic that got the most attention was the whether to purchase land for an expansion of the jail. The four and a half acres sits next to the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex. The $100,000 purchase came as a committee recommendation and was approved by the commission. According to the sheriff, the Madison County Jail is overcrowded. The purchase of the new land would allow the county to create more space for inmates. Commission Chairman Gary Deaton estimates constructing the new building would cost $30 million or more. He said the commission is not considering a tax increase and would likely borrow the money or use money from reserve funds. Purchasing the last is just a first step. No timeline for further plans to expanding the jail were discussed.
