Heavy rains cause flooding, road closures in Crockett Co.

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — Flooding closes two roads in Crockett County Tuesday. “It seems to be getting worse,” David Ozmet said. Johnny Powell Road and State Route 189 closed for most of the day. Tennessee Department of Transportation staff said State Route 189 had reopened around 2 p.m. Ozmet has lived along State Route 189 since he was a child. He said the heavy flooding is normal in the area. “If it’s real heavy, it’ll flood bad,” David Garrett said. Dozens of Crockett County residents said they weren’t surprised by the flooding and detours. “I can’t tell you when it’s going to happen, but if it’s going to rain, you better watch it,” Ozmet said. Officials said these roads are flood prone because the farm levees tend to be built higher than the streets. “That’s just putting more on the highway,” Ozmet said. Garrett said he’s not concerned with the flooding but doesn’t attempt to drive over the high water. “You know the old saying, ‘turn around, don’t drown,'” Garrett said. “There have been cars caught in it and had to be rescued.”
