Cody Childress Announces Candidacy for Gibson County Sheriff in 2026

GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. – Cody Childress, Patrol Captain of the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, has formally announced his intention to run for Sheriff in the 2026 election. With over 29 years of service in law enforcement, all of it dedicated to the people of Gibson County, Childress says his campaign will focus on experience, integrity, and a commitment to community safety.

“Many of you have been asking for years, so here it is,” Childress said. “After nearly three decades of serving in law enforcement right here in Gibson County, I am honored to announce my intent to run for Sheriff in 2026.”

Childress began his career with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office in the mid-1990s as a corrections officer and has advanced through the ranks to his current role as Patrol Captain. In that position, he oversees daily patrol and court operations, supervises training for deputies, and manages the department’s vehicle fleet. Over the years, Childress has been a visible presence not only on patrol but also representing the Sheriff’s Office in countless civic outreach efforts such as Read Across America in area elementary schools, Shop with a Cop, trunk-or-treat events, and Gibson County’s many parades, to name a few.

“Public safety has always been my calling, and Gibson County has always been my home,” Childress said. “The people of this county deserve a Sheriff’s Office that is professional, transparent, and dedicated to building trust. I have spent my career working to keep our neighborhoods safe, and I believe my experience has prepared me to lead the Sheriff’s Office into the future.”

Childress emphasized that his campaign will be rooted in both tradition and progress. “Law enforcement is about more than just enforcing the law; it is about protecting and serving,” he said. “We face challenges that require strong leadership, whether it is the fight against drugs, addressing mental health in our justice system, or simply making sure every family feels safe. My goal is to build a Sheriff’s Office that is accountable, approachable, and focused on the needs of the citizens.”

As the campaign unfolds, Childress plans to outline his platform in greater detail, highlighting his priorities for community engagement, crime prevention, officer development, and fiscal responsibility. He expressed gratitude for the support he has already received and said he looks forward to visiting with residents across the county in the months ahead.

“I don’t take this responsibility lightly,” Childress said. “It would be the honor of my life to serve as your Sheriff, and I promise to give my very best to the people of Gibson County.”
