How local utility companies are bracing for possible outages

JACKSON, Tenn. — This weekend’s winter storm has some potential to knock out power for some in the region.

Freezing temperatures, heavy precipitation, as well as ice on tree branches on powerlines can all contribute to outages.

Some outages, depending on location, can last anywhere between minutes, hours, and even days.

Jackson Energy Authority tells us what steps they’re taking to manage concerns.

“So we’re taking the same steps that everyone takes and that’s a concern with our personnel, that they may be gone for an extended period of time, and to make sure your family is okay because once you get into these situations, it can be a lengthy restoration process, we hope not but we try and be prepared,” said Steve Bowers, communications manager for JEA.

Electrical companies in the path of the storm have actually expressed serious concerns about people losing power at some point through this weekend.

Rita Alexander, the VP Human Resources for Gibson Electric tells us how they’re preparing.

“We’re taking steps to also be prepared, we make sure that our personnel and equipment are ready, we sharpen our chain saws and make sure our trucks are fueled and well stocked. We have materials that we store in each of our five-member service center locations so that we can gain access, and quickly respond and restore power just as soon as possible,” said Alexander.

Some steps you can take now to prepare for potential outages include the following: grabbing blankets, charging devices as well as portable chargers to full, and organizing backup heating sources.

Closing off the coldest rooms in your home can also help manage the freeze and centralize the heat. If you lose power, remember to report it, then compensate for your top priorities.
