Deadly Wreck on Interstate 40

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is at the scene of a deadly wreck on Interstate 40 at mile marker 108. According to THP, the wreck happened early this morning and blocked eastbound traffic while troopers were investigating and cleaning up the wreck. Reports from the scene indicate that Maxine Hayes, 70, of Lexington, who was driving a Chevy Blazer, drove onto the Interstate going the wrong way and struck a FedEx truck head on. The FedEx truck crossed over Interstate 40 and then hit an 18-wheeler head on. Hayes and the man driving the 18-wheeler, Michael Peterson, 50, of Homasassa, Florida, were killed. As of about 9:10 a.m., one eastbound lane has been reopened to traffic. The two men in the FedEx truck were taken to the hospital. Names of the people involved in the crashes have not been released.
