Boater Safety: Awareness Out On The Water

PARIS LANDING, Tenn.--Memorial Day is finally here and that means the unofficial start of summer. Hot and humid conditions have many out on the water and kicking the throttle on the boat into full gear. "The biggest thing we are trying to get across is boater safety We want you to wear your life jackets first off and to just be as safe as you can be. Make sure to be mindful of the other boaters around you to avoid any crashes that could occur by taking your eyes off the wheel." Steven Brewer, an Officer for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Officials are beefing up patrols and checking for safety equipment as well as impaired drivers. "Were looking for a Type IV throw cushions and life jackets. Were also looking for a fire extinguisher and the other usual safety equipment. We do check the registration to make sure that the boat is current and is actually coming back to who its register too."Brewer says. Officials want to keep boaters and swimmers safe this summer season. Officers say make sure to wear your life jacket and be ready for a surprise inspection. "Like I said. I just want everyone to have a good time and enjoy the day but the biggest thing is we want them to be safe." Brewer says. Boaters agree that the extra patrols are a good thing and allow for a safe time out on the water. "The more wildlife resource officers we have out there makes a difference in keeping people safe. Whether it be enforcing the usage of a life jacket or checking for drivers boating under the influence it makes a difference. It keeps a presence for people to act responsible on the water and creates less accidents." Matt Byars, Boater and Fisherman says. Just remember to have those life jackets, sunblock, full tank of gas, fire extinguisher while you are out on the water to keep you and your family safe. Most of all have fun cruising the open water and stay safe while floating along this summer season.
